Classes & Curriculum

Our Preschool Curriculum

The preschool curriculum at Caughlin Preschool divides children by age group and developmental progress. We work to help children develop higher-level learning skills, language development, social skills, and more. Our students take a hands-on approach to learning, while our caring, experienced staff provide support that is student-centered. Each student has a portfolio that we use to help guide them on their development and growth through our educational curriculum. See some of the classes that we offer below!

Infant/Toddler

Our infant and toddler program is focused on providing loving care in a home-like environment. We offer limited space and low staff to child ratios, and take great care to follow individual schedules aligned with family routines.

Caregivers utilize ASQ assessments to ensure each child makes progress with developmental milestones. We follow safe sleep practices, and our teachers are trained in infant CPR. The majority of our Infant and Toddler teachers have their CDA in Child Development.

Bottles are heated in a specific warmer. Our program encourages and supports breast feeding. Infants each have their own crib  They spend their waking hours interacting with the other children and caregivers.

Preschool

We believe that children learn best through play and experiences. All materials in each classroom have a purpose.  Our teachers are trained to use open ended questions to help scaffold their learning while letting them take the lead with their play.

Positive reinforcement and redirection are used to model appropriate behaviors. Picture daily schedules are posted at children’s level to assist with routines. Teachers create and follow a weekly curriculum that is thematic. Copies of curriculum are posted in each classroom and sent home via email.

Pre-Kindergarten Classes

The pre-kindergarten classes at Caughlin Preschool focus on providing fun for kids while helping them to develop an appreciation for learning. Different learning opportunities are presented through activities that encourage engagement and enjoyment. Many of these activities help this age group to develop all the necessary skills to later better focus on learning in a school setting. We offer a homelike environment to help children feel comfortable with expressing themselves and opening up to learning opportunities.

Pre-First Grade Classes

Our pre-first grade programs are an excellent alternative to Washoe County School District Kindergarten. These programs are all day and offer a small class size. Beginning in Pre-K (and sometimes earlier), we implement the Balanced Literacy Program, which provides different kinds of reading and writing. Reading and writing are interrelated. Based on our learning milestones, children advance through different stages of learning in our programs. Through this developmentally-based program, we ensure every child progresses at a pace comfortable to them and a pace designed to help them learn without being overwhelmed.

Activities

  • Read Alouds: Children experience books and stories they cannot read. This instills the concept of story, develops oral language, and sparks interest in literacy.
  • Shared Reading: Children participate and get the feel of reading through use of big books and interactive stories, charts, poems, and more.
  • Guided Reading: Children learn how to read with support from a well-trained teacher. Teachers use leveled books to individualize instruction.
  • Independent Reading: Children read on their own using the skills they have learned in Guided Reading.
  • Guided Writing: Teachers work one on one with students.
  • Interactive Writing: Students and teachers share the pen to write a message or story.
  • Independent Writing: Students practice what they have learned during journal or writing center time.
